Yesterday was Mother’s Day and as it turns out, Ryan Reynolds suited up in Wade Wilson’s iconic red and black mercenary gear for a Deadpool-themed Mother’s Day greeting and the star shared it via social media in appropriate Deadpool style, with an R-rated caption to go with it. Some would say it’s perfect. Adding to official costume images, behind-the-scenes photos of supporting characters and the antihero himself (on a toilet), all shared via Twitter, Reynolds has this to add to his growing Wade Wilson collection.

The 1991 date reference refers to the introduction of Deadpool in Marvel Comics. Creators Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld included the “Merc with Mouth” in New Mutants #98 which debuted in February 1991. Reynolds later followed up on Twitter with a real shout out for his mom but the above tweet and image continues the trend of smart marketing on the part of Reynolds, the creative team and Twentieth Century Fox’s marketing department. Since announcing the film, unveiling the official costume and later, confirming (on April Fools Day, no less) that Deadpool would be rated R, they’ve been doing everything to make the project stand out as something unique, because it is unique and it needs to be. That’s Deadpool.
